Fitting notes

Measure the bore and check taper and ovality before fitting. New piston rings require a correctly honed or rebored cylinder, correct ring end gaps and the specified running-in procedure. Always replace stretch bolts and follow the factory torque sequence.

When you need pistons, not just rings

High oil consumption on the EA888 is usually blamed on the rings, but by the time a car is using a litre every 1000 km the piston skirt coating is normally worn through as well. If the bore still shows its original cross-hatch and measures within tolerance, a new piston with rings restores the seal; if the skirt is scuffed or the ring grooves are widened, fitting rings alone will burn oil again within a season. Check ring end gap in the bore before assembly — a gap that is already at the wear limit on a new piston means the bore needs work.

Fitting notes for the EA888 piston set

These are standard-bore pistons supplied with rings, pin and circlips, sold per piston so you can replace a single damaged unit or a full set. Measure each bore at three heights and two angles, hone only if the taper is within spec, and check piston-to-bore clearance against the workshop data for your engine code. Fit new connecting rod bolts, oil the ring lands, use a tapered ring compressor and keep the ring gaps 120 degrees apart. Running-in matters: vary the load for the first 1000 km instead of holding a constant motorway speed.
