Also cross-referenced to

Passat B7 / Passat CC, Golf VI Estate and several SEAT and Skoda models use the same module family with a different index letter. If the module in the car reads 5K0953569AK, AJ or S, message us the number and we will confirm whether AL is the correct replacement.

What this module controls

  • Slip ring / clock spring — airbag, horn and multifunction steering wheel buttons
  • Steering angle sensor G85 — required by ESP, ABS and the parking assist functions
  • Turn signal and wiper stalk interface, and the cruise control signals from the lever
  • Ignition switch signals on cars where the ignition is read through J527

Symptoms of a failed module

Horn and steering wheel buttons stop working together · airbag warning light on · ESP / ABS warning light with a steering angle sensor fault · indicators that cancel wrongly or do not self-cancel · intermittent faults that appear only on full lock. The usual cause is the internal ribbon cable inside the slip ring snapping after years of full-lock turning.

Technical data

Control unit J527, address 16 · hardware 016 / software 0180 · ASAM dataset EV_VW360SteerWheelUDS · Valeo column stalks · supplied with fitting screws · weight approx. 0.25 kg · made in the EU.

Coding and calibration

The new module has to be coded with the coding of the old unit before it will work. Read and save the long coding from address 16 before you remove the old module — if it is already dead, code the new one from the vehicle’s PR list (multifunction steering wheel, rear wiper, automatic transmission, cruise via lever) and then run the basic setting for the steering angle sensor G85: full lock left, full lock right, straight ahead, then confirm. ESP will stay in fault until G85 has been calibrated.

Important fitment notes

  • Valeo stalks only. Cars with a different column stalk supplier use a different module and this one will not fit.
  • Not for cars with cruise control plus speed limiter. Those need a cruise stalk without the limiter function, or a different module index.
  • Battery disconnected and airbag system discharged before removing the steering wheel — follow the factory procedure and never turn the slip ring by hand once it is off the column.

Condition & warranty
