About this part
The 2Q0959659 crash sensor is a brand-new genuine VW Group part — the front centre impact sensor in the airbag (SRS) system of Volkswagen Group MQB-A0 cars. It is bolted to the front structure behind the bumper, in the middle of the car, and it is the sensor that tells the airbag control unit how hard the front of the vehicle has been hit. One sensor, one connector, no moving parts — and when it fails, the airbag warning light comes on and the whole restraint system is disabled until it is replaced.
This is not the airbag control unit
Worth saying clearly, because the two numbers sit next to each other and are regularly confused. 2Q0959659 is a sensor, not the airbag ECU. The control unit for these cars is 2Q0959655xx (2Q0959655AJ, AP, AM, AS, BJ), a large aluminium module under the centre console that costs ten times as much. If you have been told you need the “airbag module” and your fault code points to a front crash sensor, this is the part you need. If your control unit has stored crash data after an accident, a new sensor will not fix it — the module has to be reset or replaced.
Where it sits and what it does
On the Polo AW and its platform sisters the sensor is mounted centrally on the front cross member, reached from below after removing the lower bumper trim or the underbody panel. It measures deceleration of the front structure in the first milliseconds of an impact and sends that signal to the airbag control unit, which compares it with its own internal sensor before firing the front airbags and belt tensioners. Because it is a safety input, the system runs a self-check on every start: a missing or implausible signal from this sensor disables deployment, which is why the warning light stays on rather than resetting itself.
OE / reference numbers
2Q0959659 · 2Q0 959 659 · ETKA group 9 / 59 (959), catalogue entry “sensor, front centre”. It appears as item 5 in diagram 837-959-300 alongside the 2Q0959655 control unit, the 4M0959643 rear crash sensor and the 4M0955557A pressure sensor — none of those are interchangeable with this part. Fasteners are not included: the sensor is held by a self-locking M6 nut (N 10737001) on a weld stud, and the nut should be renewed, not reused.
Compatible vehicles
Fits the MQB-A0 family listed below. Because the same platform is built in several regions under different names, the safest check is the number stamped on the sensor you are removing — send us a photo of the old part or your VIN and we will confirm before dispatch.

Symptoms of a failed sensor
Airbag warning light permanently on with no other faults present; a diagnostic fault code describing the front crash sensor as open circuit, short to ground or implausible signal; airbag light that comes on after a minor bump, kerb strike or flood; or a light that appears only in cold or wet weather because water has reached the connector. Front-end repair work is the other common trigger — the sensor is easy to damage or leave unplugged when a bumper, intercooler or radiator is replaced, and the light will not go out until it is plugged back in and the fault memory is cleared.
Fitting notes
Disconnect the battery negative terminal and wait at least ten minutes before touching any yellow SRS connector — the airbag system holds enough reserve charge to fire after the battery is off. Unplug the connector by releasing its locking tab, never by pulling the wires. The sensor must sit flat against bare metal: paint, underbody coating or rust under the mounting face changes the signal it reads, so clean the surface and fit it dry, with no grease and no washer. Use a new self-locking nut and torque it to the figure in the workshop manual (roughly 8 Nm for the M6 fixing — check your model). No coding is required for the sensor itself, but the airbag fault memory has to be cleared with a diagnostic tool afterwards, and the warning light re-checked after a test drive.
Condition & warranty
Genuine new VW Group part — brand new, never fitted, never refurbished, supplied in its factory packaging with the VW label and production date code. This is not a used sensor pulled from a breaker and not a rebuilt unit, which matters on a safety component: a used crash sensor has already been through an impact event or a front-end repair, and its internal element can be out of specification without showing any external damage. 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects. Sensors are non-returnable once the connector has been plugged in, so please confirm the number before installation.
Wholesale
Tiered pricing for 1 pc, 5 pcs and 20 pcs is shown below. Body shops buy these in batches because a front-end repair on any MQB-A0 car usually ends with one damaged sensor — tell us the quantity and destination country and we will quote combined shipping. Export documentation available on request.
Fitment
Compatibility depends on model year, market, engine and the coding of the car. The table below lists the applications this 2Q0959659 is normally fitted to. Send us your VIN before ordering and we will confirm fitment for your VW Polo AW / T-Cross.
