MIB2 vs MIB3: How to Identify Your VW/Audi Head Unit Before Ordering an Upgrade

“Will this screen fit my customer’s car?” — almost every wrong-part order we see starts with the head unit generation being misidentified. Volkswagen Group’s MIB (Modular Infotainment Toolkit) generations look similar from the driver’s seat but differ in screen connector, main unit format and what retrofits they support. Here is how to identify them quickly, before you quote.

The quick visual check

  • MIB1 / early MIB2 (MQB, 2013–2016): resistive or early capacitive touch, usually 5 to 8 inch non-glass screens on Composition Media / Discover Media units. Plastic bezel, thicker unit body. Example: the RCD420 radio head unit era.
  • MIB2 (2016–2019): capacitive glass touchscreens, 8-inch Discover Pro with sliding main unit. If the bezel is glass edge-to-edge and the unit is a two-part design (display + main unit in the glovebox), it is MIB2. See the MIB2 8-inch glass touchscreen for reference.
  • MIB3 (2019+): faster processor, natural-language voice control, wireless App-Connect on many units, and in the Golf 8 a fully integrated one-piece design with touch sliders. Video input architecture changed, which matters for camera retrofits.

Why the generation matters for retrofits

The generation determines three practical things:

  • Camera integration path. On MIB2/MQB, rear camera signal handling differs from MIB3/MQB Evo. A camera kit built for MIB2 will not simply display on MIB3 — the gateway and video routing differ. This is why our Golf 8 camera kits are listed separately from Golf 7 kits.
  • Screen upgrade options. Going from a 5-inch Composition unit to an 8-inch glass MIB screen on a PQ or early MQB car is a popular, cost-effective upgrade — see the 8-inch MIB glass touchscreen for VW MQB and the display + host + harness sets that include the main unit and loom.
  • CarPlay/Android Auto behaviour. MIB2 offers wired App-Connect; many MIB3 units do it wirelessly. Customers asking for “wireless CarPlay retrofit” may actually just need the correct MIB3 unit or a firmware path, not an aftermarket box.

Check the unit label, not the screen

The fastest reliable method: pull the unit’s part number from the label or via the service menu (VCDS auto-scan is even better). Part number families:

  • 5G0 / 5GD … 035/036 — MQB Composition/Discover units (MIB1–MIB2 depending on revision)
  • 3Q0 … 358 — higher-feature MIB2 units (Passat B8, Tiguan, Arteon)
  • 5H0 / 5NA … 035 — MIB3 era units in Golf 8, Octavia IV, Golf 7.5 facelift refresh

Match the last four digits carefully — hardware revisions within the same family can decide whether a retrofit harness plugs in directly or needs an adapter.

Common upgrade paths we support

  • 5-inch Composition → 8-inch glass MIB2: display swap plus main unit and coding; most requested on Golf 7, Passat B8, Tiguan MK2.
  • Non-nav Discover → Discover Pro: bigger map screen, needs the correct main unit and antenna set.
  • MIB2 → MIB3 in MQB Evo cars: rarely worth it for screen size alone; usually done alongside camera or Virtual Cockpit projects where the customer wants a single integrated result.

When in doubt, send us the auto-scan or a photo of the unit label — we answer with the exact compatible parts from our multimedia system range.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep the steering wheel controls after a screen upgrade?

Yes on all supported paths — the controls talk to the CAN bus, not the screen. Coding confirms the button layout.

Does the 8-inch MIB screen need a new fascia on a Golf 7?

The glass display replaces the original trim-integrated screen; the correct fascia revision is included in our kit listings.

Is firmware updates part of the retrofit?

We ship units on stable firmware revisions and advise which SWaP/firmware level matches your camera and phone integration plans.
