About this part

5Q0953569A steering column module — genuine VW J527 control module with slip ring and steering angle sensor G85 for VW Golf 7, Passat B8, Tiguan MK2, Arteon, Skoda Octavia III, Superb III and SEAT Leon 5F

Genuine Volkswagen Group part in the factory box, manufactured by Valeo in Hungary — the same unit that leaves the assembly line. It is the steering column electronics module behind address 16 (J527), carrying the slip ring, the steering angle sensor G85, the airbag and horn contact path, and the interface for the multifunction steering wheel, the column stalks and the paddle shifters on DSG cars.

What this module actually does

  • Slip ring / clock spring — feeds the driver airbag igniter, the horn and the multifunction steering wheel buttons across the rotating column
  • Steering angle sensor G85 — used by ESP, ABS, ACC, PLA/OPS parking assist and the lane assist functions
  • Column stalk interface — indicators, wipers, and on cars with lever-operated cruise, the GRA/CCS signals
  • Paddle shifters — DSG shift signals pass through this module on MQB cars
  • Steering column lock / ignition authorisation signals on KESSY-equipped cars

Symptoms of a failed module

Horn, MFSW buttons and paddle shifters all dead at the same time · airbag warning light with fault B10001B “driver airbag igniter resistance too high” · ESP and ABS lights with a G85 fault · indicators that no longer self-cancel or cancel at the wrong angle · faults that only appear at full lock. On a car of this age the usual cause is the internal ribbon cable in the slip ring fatiguing after years of full-lock turning, not a coding problem.

Three things that decide whether the job succeeds

1. This is the non-heated steering wheel version. 5Q0953569A has the 16-pin connector and no heating circuit. If you are retrofitting or replacing a heated steering wheel you need 5Q0953569B, which has a 14-pin connector with two heavier gauge pins for the heating element — the two are not plug-compatible without a rewired harness.

2. The new module must be coded before it works. Read and save the long coding from address 16 with VCDS or ODIS before you unplug the old unit. If the old module is already dead, code from the vehicle’s PR list: multifunction steering wheel, rear wiper, automatic transmission, cruise type, paddle shifters. A module fitted with wrong or empty coding will power up, communicate, and still do nothing.

3. The gateway adaptation is the step most people miss. In address 19 (Gateway) → Adaptation → “Multi Function Steering Wheel Control Module – Version”, set the value to match the car: GRA/CCS for lever-operated cruise, ACC for adaptive cruise. Get this wrong and the column module codes cleanly, the buttons work, but cruise control refuses to engage — the single most common complaint after this repair.

G85 basic setting

After coding, run the basic setting for the steering angle sensor: engine running, steering full lock left, full lock right, return to straight ahead, hold, then confirm. ESP and ABS will stay in fault until G85 has been calibrated — that is expected, not a defective module.

Condition & warranty

Brand-new genuine Volkswagen Group part, never fitted, in the original factory packaging with the VW hologram label. 12-month warranty. We do not sell repaired, remanufactured or re-labelled units — if you need a repair service for your existing module, that is a different product.

Wholesale

Workshop and wholesale quantities available — tiered pricing below. Column modules are a high-return item because customers order the wrong index; we would rather confirm fitment before shipping than process a return. Send the VIN, the part number on the old module, and whether the car has a heated steering wheel and ACC.

Fitment

Compatibility depends on model year, market, engine and the coding of the car. The table below lists the applications this 5Q0953569A is normally fitted to. Send us your VIN before ordering and we will confirm fitment for your VW Golf 7 / Passat B8 / Tiguan MK2.
